I tried to use Kuler but computer took to long to download Adobe Flash Reader so I decided to create my own color scheme. So I created my own color swatches by double clicking on the color pallete and clicked on box "Only Web Colors" Then selected color and saved the hexadecimal # for each color.
#66ccff, for light Blue
#5d6ffb for Blue Purple
#f88538 for Light Orange
#f8f138 for Yellow
Then made separate layers for selected shapes (bird,airplane, and people) and colors. Selected font and title and arched and did the same for the subtitle but but on its own layer and arched in opposite direction. Then typed paragraph using warped text and used black font for drop shadow. Then used gradient mask on the orange person.

Its interesting to see the works I've done in my portfolio and what things I've applied to them. When looking back at them, it also kinda makes you see things that you want to modify and improve on.

How do these completed images illustrate what you have learned this quarter?
Relating to the first answer, by looking at the images, you see the strengths and weaknesses and use those as future reference for next time.

Are you happy with the results? Why?
Definitely. I make sure that I'm satisfied with the results of my projects before I submit them.


What would you do different?
Experiment with other tools and filters I don't usually use.

Portfolio - Karel Rasovsky

Wow, this is it! All these baby steps taken each and every week added up to quite a comprehensive survey of Photoshop capabilities. No question, this is an evolution - already, I feel my first web banner designed only two weeks ago is woefully inadequate. I would create a completely different concept today, knowing my digital brush so much better now. For me, this class was a significant step forward. Starting the term not knowing anything about Adobe CS, this was rather a steep learning curve for me. Coupled with my Dreamweaver class, I am ready to go out and put it all to use. One big learning - Photoshop revealed how pixel-starved my digital photos were. I will never take a pic in anything but a "raw" format going forward. The other big learning was all that collective experience shared on our class blog - very enlightening.

Go and make the most out of Photoshop - best of luck to you all!

Had trouble with Kuler...some confusion between my former MultiMedia login/password and what I tried to enter for the Adobe site. Got it settled, but by then I already had a color scheme:

These were pulled from the images that I used.

Images...I kinda cheated and used the images from the Mid-term. Which, unfortunately, means I don't quite remember what I did to touch them up. But I usually use Levels and Curves. Pulled images using the eliptical marquee tool for the banner and then used some edge effects

I recreated the text color from the banner to make the exclamation. Contrasting colors: 461010 with a 2px stroke using fffc00.

Buttons: used polygon tool. In the "actual" web site, the button would provide different text for each mountain. Possible rolloever: just a color change...maybe to the contrasting colors 461010 and fffc00.

Missing some stuff...but out of time. Mea culpa.

I think it's slightly different in CS3: Tools/PhotoShop/Web Photo Gallery.

What do I think of my portfolio? Not a bad trick for an old dog.

How do the images illustrate what I learned? They cover a fairly wide range of PS tools.

Happy? I think I got a good overview of PS.

Do different? Well, taking this class while I'm suposed to be learning two software packages at my day job ain't exactly one of my better ideas.

For my final project web sit mock up I came up with these Kuler numbers (fffc19-b21212-ff0000-1485cc-0971b2).
My image is called finalproject_kenavdeef.psd.
I first started with a purple background with a beveled and embossed effect. I then have a picture background of equipment that is blured. Next I have 3 shape layers that for text that have a drop shadow and color overlay of red. I then have white text with a drop shadow on the shapes. I have a picture of myself where I cut the background out and reduduced the picture size. I have another picture of the equipment that is also reduced in size. I then cut out the American Guild of court videographers logo and reduced the size. Next I used the stamp pad to copy the guild logo and used it behind my picture. At the top is the banner layer that is blue. I imported some text for the navigation and have a black stripe with a cut out for the active page on the website. At the very top I imported my business logo A/V Digital and some yellow text with shadow and outer glow effect. I also used a custom shape tool for a tape reel on the top right corner with effects. I had dificulties using or finding applications using some of the tools you wanted us to use. I had no use for the the pen, dodge, polygon tools. I did use the blend modes on just about every layer, filters I used the gaussian blur on the equipment layer to blur the effect. I also used the quick selection tool to cut me out of the background. I then used the stamp to copy the guild logo and place the image behind me. I used the gradient on the background layer to vary the purple layer.
The tools that worked the best for me are the quick tool for removing a background from objects and blend modes for enhancing backgrounds.
The tools I did use were the Blend modes, filters, quick selection, stamp, and gradient tools. these were the tools that gave me desired effects.
My experience with this project is a little confusing by not ever building a website, but effective by learning the new tools that are CS4 than my previous version photoshop 5.

I took this class to learn all the different tools in Photoshop, and was pleased with all that I learned. I will definitely be using it a lot more now that I know how. I could really see the difference in my pictures from what I learned, and now I am one step closer to my goal of web development.

Portfolio - Darryl Zenger

I took this class to learn how to use Photoshop to make assets for web pages. I have learned to make headers, buttons and bullets. I’m happy with the web assets that I’ve made. I’m afraid that I’m using Photoshop mostly to size images for the web and I know that it can do so much more. I can see that more classes or study would be needed to learn this powerful program and the many other things that I’m sure can be done with it. I had fun with this class getting started with the basics.

Subject: Web Gallery

I enjoyed making my portfolio. The Web Gallery program is nice to use to view your pictures with a nice looking layout. It is cool to put all my images on one page to see my work in the CAS 208 class, this is a good way to look at my work. I am fairly happy with my pictures, but I now feel like I have better control with CS4 Photoshop understanding some of the tools I did not before. If I did anything different I would work on masking a little more with my graphics.

Project 5 Cameron Wold

So I tried to make a poster advertising a concert for 2 bands I like, Behold... The Arctopus and UneXpect. So I also did a theme of amazing bassists because they both have one. The color theme was white, black, and #a31a1a-a shade of red. So for certain things like the unexpect logo and part of the guitar I just put a satin shade over the images to go more with the color theme. So for the images I extracted them through pen, eraser, and quick selection. And ordered them in a way I liked with coils of guitar strings lacing the top and sides like a theater drape because it is a live performance. As for the text I tried to make my own type of name logo for each band still representing their styles. Arctopus is a technical, sporadic, and sounds computerized. So I put an inner glow with dissolve to make the name somewhat sporadic. And the font is ok in that it is a text font from a computer and represents the other aspects. While UneXpect always has a large exuberant X in their name and is a more organic font in comparison to the rest of the text. So I made 2 different layers with X on its own and then I used liquify to stretch the X to what it usually is like more so. And for both names I embossed both to give both names a lot of depth make it noticeable in comparison to the rest of the text. For the top text I embossed it to give it a shine and made it the color a31a1a but it blended into the rest of the poster so I gave it a large spread out black shadow to contrast it making it easily legible. As for the rest of the text it was just standard and was not edited other then just skewing it slightly.

Project5

Throughout this my project I struggled to pick a color scheme. While I was making my project, I just decided to make my own on what I thought would look good together. I have always thought that black and yellow look good, so I decided to go with that. I also had a tough time on what to do for my overall project. I decided to make a little add for the iPod Touch, since I enjoy mine. I used the text path tool to make text wrap around the iPod stating all it's cool features and what it has to offer. I used the gradient tool to make the title that reads "ipod touch" and also the word wrap tool for both the title and the bottom text. For the bottom text, I applied a inner glow to it to make it different. Last, I put shapes of music notes and starts on the page to make it more eye-catching. Overall, I enjoyed this project. I did learn something new, with the text path tool.

Project 5 — Becca.

The banner I created with text and shapes is meant to be a public safety poster warning London Underground passengers about zombies.

My color scheme had four colors: #000000 (black shadows), #909dad (light blue accents); #3f3e34 (brown background text) and #b5b5b5 (gray background text).

Most of the time on this project I spent tinkering with the text and with the gradient map, which I wanted to be very muted, mostly black but with gray and blue shadows. I think I succeeded better with the gradient map than I did with the text, but it was a good opportunity to practice kerning and leading, which was a great help, since I needed the kerning for the title and subtitle to be very different from the kerning in the paragraph, since the different fonts needed to be readable.

I layered in two basic shapes — the rectangle underneath the main paragraph, which I set to Multiply to make the paragraph text easier to see, and the crown symbol underneath the warped "LDPS" logo at the bottom.

I only used two stock images for the background; a sidewise photo of Big Ben which I wish was more visible in the end result, and a girl in a zombie costume, whose eyes look so strikingly blue in the photo that I incorporated them into the color scheme.


I think I succeeded fairly well with my typographical design, which turned out eye-catching — I'd stop and look if I saw a poster like that — but the ad copy didn't come out as creative as I was hoping it would (I'm still too tired to write properly). Maybe later, I will rework it and try to invent a steampunk version.

Project 5 - Tina Leung

After reading the requirements for this project, I decided to make a special edition cover of a fictional magazine :)

The color scheme I used for this image involved the following colors: #501614, #3d3b50, #ede0d7, #994930, #eea759. They are basically alterations of the colors blue, red, yellow-orange, grey and brown.

Originally, the main title, "Pacquiao," was white screen blended but I changed it to balance the color in the image. I chose a plain text because it would keep the layout clean.

I warped "Mayweather" to fit the shape of the speed ball and blended it using the dodge and eraser tools and used different brushes for each for a rougher effect.

The shapes I used were simple. I figured that the quote bubble fit the contents well and went with a rounded rectangle for the the other.

Overall, I kind of struggled with coming up with a pleasing product with the requirements given. I'm pretty simplistic with my style so it was tough to use so many elements in one composition but I'm happy with what I came up with.

The original Image was a different color altogether.

I changed the Hugh and Saturation to get the Purple look and Also sharpened the image.

To get the border effect of white and black I created 2 layers for the white and the black. I stroked each layer to get the border and placed the larger one underneath.

I have several brushes that I downloaded and I used a few to get the "Splatter" effect. The star shape is made of 2 shapes. I used a gradient mask for the center one.

The "UNITED WE DRIFT" circle of text was pretty easy to do as well. I made one and used the text transformation and made it arc. I duplicated the first one and just flipped it and put them together.

For the paragraph on top, I used Kernal to spread the text out.

Project 5

This image that I’m creating for project 5 is going to be used for a background on some web pages about The Rolling Stones. Since its being used as a background the text and shapes are not going to be as bold or stand out; this image is taking a back seat so to speak. I started with my background The color scheme #FA6F72, #90111C, #30070B. I moved in an image of the band and set it to soft light in order to fade them out. Then I placed “Not Fade Away” text over them and set the opacity to 50% and then warped the text lower shell and added a bevel. Then I added the title and warped text arch, I set opacity and bevel the same for all. Then I added the Stones logo to the left middle of image. Blending options for logo I used Satin and Inner Shadow. I added the paragraph of text and changed its font and color and size to fit the area where I wanted. Then I added some music note shapes in the corners in order to add some shapes to image.

I went to Kuler to look at color schemes, and ended up picking colors similiar to those that I found in a complementary scheme, though I did end up tweaking them a little bit to meet my liking. I found the site to be a good basis for my color selection. I also added the red for contrast. I am very happy with the resulting color scheme.

Explanation of Process:

I began with a light blue background. I removed the background from the water bottle layer usigd the quick selection tool. I moved this over the background. I then added a layer with the garbage image and created a clipping mask behind the bottle. I then drew a circle from which I extracted a path that I used the give the curve to the text "Drink Tap Water" (my eye-catching title!!!). I then hid that circle. I warped this text slightly using the Edit->Free Transform->Warp. I placed three gradient layers over the light blue background, two multipy layers and one dissolve layer. I changed the hue/saturation. I then imported some text about the many dangerous chemicals that are found in bottled water. I set this at 40% opacity and applied a drop shadow effect. I used leading and kerning to achieve a desirable distance between the letters, words, and rows, and also played with the height and width of the letters. I really enjoyed learning how to use all these options. I found that they were very helpful in improving the aesthetic aspect of the text. I added some shapes, kind of like little globes, which you now can barely distinguish, and put them into a group to which I applied a dissolve effect. I added a smaller circle to use as a path, and made another text layer that said "drink tap water." I assigned this 70% opacity and duplicated this all around the background. I put these together into a group and added "drop shadow" and "gradient overlay" effects. I then removed the background from the tap using the quick selection tool. I added a yellow rounded rectangle to which I added the following effects: drop shadow, box blur, texturizer, and gaussian blur. Above this I added a layer of text about the negative environmental aspects of bottled water. I used leading and kerning and changed many aspects of the text from inside the pull down box including font family, color, height, and width. To this I applied drop shadow and outer glow effects. I duplicated this layer and placed the second layer behind the first with 60% opacity. To this I applied a black to white gradient mask.

I picked an image of a parrot that we saw in Mexico, and used the auto correct tools.

The color scheme that I used was from the colors of the bird's feathers. The hexidecimal codes are (cc0000),(330099), (ffff00), and (0099cc). For the title I used the effects layer with a gradient overlay, stroke and arch. For the paragraph text I used leading, and that tightened the text, which I liked. The tool that I really enjoy is gradient; it lets you really alter and tweak the text in a fun way.

Project 5: Karel Rasovsky

Text and shapes? Why not try to design a Christmas card. I started in color heaven – Kuler website - experimenting with the application and mixing my own themes. Finally, I decided to go with someone else’s palette, I believe it was called “Sprucing it up for Christmas”. Lovely combo of five colors: darkest green (2E5C32), middle green (328C4C), light green (9EB84F), yellow (F58442), red (C23B31).

After the dust settled, I only used three out of those in my composition, but it was nice to have choices throughout the project available. Kuler makes mixing sub-par, unprofessional-looking color schemes simply impossible. The single negative thing about this application is that one can spend entirely too much time on this beautiful website!

On with the composition, I challenged myself whether I could create a Christmas card with only shapes and text, plus a magic bag of Photoshop tools. First, I sketched out a silhouette of a Christmas tree, made out of garlands and stars. The garlands were created through custom shape tool, and subsequently reshaped via transformations (scaling, warping etc.) to forge a swirling shape and effect. Some subsequent layer aligning to make them look as if wrapped around a tree and we have a foundation. I then filled the imaginary tree silhouette with star shapes. The larger-sized stars were generated through a sequence of: path selection à transform (rotating) à duplicating the transform process. The transform/duplicate process left some room for improvement, to better align the stars along the garlands. I simply applied some edit/transform – scaling and warping to achieve just that. The rest was straightforward enough, as I simply filled the tree silhouette with randomly scattered and generated smaller-size stars – the Christmas tree was born. It was surprisingly simple, the results were better than expected. (The minus was that this generates a layer per each star shape, resulting in 40+ of them in my composition. Fortunately, layers are cheap in Photoshop…).

I placed the composition on the darkest-green background from my palette, and created a glow effect at the top of the three. A gradient mask layer on top of the background layer did the trick here. This is coming together nicely, but what to do with my tree top? Who would have thought that image of planet t Earth selected a couple of projects ago will come in handy again – it was the perfect fit. The theme was complete now – a star-spangled Christmas tree, with bluish Earth glowing at the top like a giant Christmas ball. Like in peace to us all on Earth.

I framed it with “Merry Christmas 2009” on top, this in my perennial favorite “Curlz MT” font family - it gives the headline a “merry” accent, without going over the top by employing other effects. My intention was to go with the “red” from my palette, but white stand out more prominently.

I proceeded to explore the rich text-formatting capabilities of Photoshop by dropping in the “The night before Christmas” poem. No kidding, Photoshop lets you do almost anything with text. And I needed most of it – leading to perfectly fit the long lines into a constrained space (the first line called for a special treatment), kerning to proportionately space out the title, the body of the poem and the closing line. Wow, this is what it must have felt like in the days of manual type-setting – total control! Blessed are we to live in an age when everyone can be the author, typesetter and a publisher, all in one – the era of Adobe applications!

Project 5- Melissa Flores

For this project the colors numbers that i used were, e03519,1390e7,f20cea and those were for the frame that goes around the picture, the tittle, subtitle, and paragraph text. Tools i used were the rectangular marque tool for the frame, blending option(drop shadow,inner shadow,outer glow.) for the all the text.I also used warped text ( arc, arc lower) and the shaped tool ( star). Working witht his project taught me how to use the warped tool and i personally like this tool to make flyers and business cards, anything that involves marketing. I enjoyed doing this project and look forward for the next.

The color scheme I used in project 5 are (yellow ffff01, purple 710d85, blue 1a2954 and orange f1b90e). I used an eye catching title (Dog House Productions) with a warped curved text. Then I used a subtitle heading (Video Production Services). In my paragraph I used kerning with a strong with the antialising for the best text image. For the shapes I used severial things, I made a dog house with a picture of my dog in it, paws on top of the banner and dog bones included in the graphic.

Durring build the process I used a gradient mask with the wrong effect so I left it out. I did come out with an interesting effect with the texture and pattern overlay. I prefered to use all the tools because not just one tool gives all the effects.

Question: anyone having trouble logging into the Blog? I go to the site, hit [sign in], but the screen is inactive. To get it to accept my login name and password, I typically have to log out of Firefox and restart my computer.

Better question: anyone have a solution?

Anyway, the image is related to my harassment of this couple I know (they're standing on the porch of the farmhouse). I've been unmercifully urging them to quite the city and buy a goat farm in Washington County. Actually, any of those properties visible from PCC Rock Creek would do.

The background is some fantasy image.

The landscape is, I think, somewhere in South America. The shadows work pretty well as is. Used the Extract tool. Ahh...yeah, it had a few problems that I'm pretending are solar flares.

The foreground (those goats) needed to be flipped 180 degrees to make their faint shadows work. Did some color adjustment on either the landscape or foreground. Don't remember which.

The house had to be flipped for shadow purposes also. Adjust the levels before polygonal lasso-ing.

Diane and Erik got a bit pixel-ated. But they're on the porch. I had to adjust their levels (...without their permission...). They also got selected my my old favorite, the polygonal lasso tool.

Added a symbol in the middle of the background light/sun/nova/whatever. It's the latitude/longitude symbol. Kind of makes it into a "Death Star" light source. It's a bit faint.

Color scheme is kind of blue-ish.

Made the text (with effects) circular to match the immense moon.

Re-reading the assignment to get everything posted, I realized I was supposed to add gradients to the text. Mea culpa...but I did use gradients on the farmhouse (also had to use the healing brush on the resultant jpg to finish the transition) and the bottom half of Diane and Erik (...hope they're not offended...).

Project 4 - Vincent Phan

For the filters assignment, I chose a picture of a colorful (and delicious) plate of sushi roll. I played around with some of the filters, but the one that looked best for this image was smart sharpen, as it brought out the smaller details of the sushi roll. In addition to the smart sharpen filter, I also duplicated the layer and applied a gaussian blur and set the layer style to overlay, which helped in enhancing the wood grain.

My layer composition is a unicorn in a meadow with a rainbow in the sky (it was the only idea I could think of). I took three images off of google to use in this project:



I used content-aware scale on the meadow; the scaling seemed to have focused more on the meadow, and squeezed out the sky. In the unicorn image, I tried to separate the background using the mask palette. It didn't turn out so well, so I resorted to using the magic wand + eraser. I didn't like the sky in the meadow image, so I used a mask to get rid it, and placed the beach image behind the meadow layer. I added a rainbow by creating a new layer and made a rainbow patterned gradient. I then warped & distorted the layer to transform it into an arc and also give it a 3D feel. All the layers were attached to a clipping mask and fitted inside a rounded rectangle. Lastly, I added text with gradient effect and drop shadow.

Project 4 — Becca.

This was a comparatively quick and easy project for me, since I'd had more practice working with filters and layers than any of the other Photoshop tools before I started the class.

I found a lovely image of paper lanterns to use with filters.


I got the best results with an application of the Smart Sharpen filter. I tried various Blur filters but discarded them, because I wanted to keep as much detail as possible. Then I experimented with various stylistic filters. My final result, which reminds me of a bold watercolor painting, was achieved with the Poster Edges filter.


For my layered image, I decided to use this portrait of a girl wearing a hat, and give her butterfly wings.


I found a suitably large butterfly, and also a pathway lined with trees to use for the background.




Most of the work I did cobbling the layers together was in color correction — the pathway image, unlike the paper lantern image, needed a lot of color tweaking and once I had the layout framed the way I wanted it, I felt it was too busy and drew too much attention away from the model's face. Finally I shadowed it over with the same curling brush stamps I used for my last layered project, and set the stamp layer to Multiply. (I used content-aware scaling to make the trees taller, but with the effect overlying it, it's not as easy to make out.)

The wings were fun. I carefully cut them out from the butterfly image and rotated them to fit on the girl's back, and then used the Warp tool to tug their proportions into a more three-dimensional shape. I used a clipping mask to add a pattern layer to the wings, set to a low Opacity so that the effect would be more subtle.

When I was working on the layer style for the text, I discovered accidentally that framing the girl's face with a Bevel/Emboss style gave her a half-shadow, half-glow appearance that looked very magical, so I left it in. I also used Drop Shadow to make the wings look thicker.


I'm moderately proud of the result — I think it turned out better than my last project did. However, I think if I were left to my own devices, I'd remove the text; it was requested in the project outline, but I don't think it adds much to the overall composition.

Tina Leung - Project 4

I chose to put my godson, Hudson, in outer space because of the chair that he's sitting in in this photo. I found a background that I like and editted it by clipping a gradient to it and used the wind filter to add some movement. I also upped the contrast and adjusted the color using the levels tool.

I took Hudson off of his original background using the polygonal lasso and blurred the edges. Then I enhanced that photo's color using levels as well.

After finding a moon picture, I used the magic wand to select the black background then inverted my selection to copy and paste it into this image. I then clipped a gradient to the moon and warped the left side to add more depth.

I merged the shooting star down to the background in order to blend the edges well after using a screen to overlay it. I also had to rotate it a bit to get the right angle.

The top text is just black with an outer glow and the bottom text is white.

I tried liquifying the back of Hudson's image to show some movement but didn't like the outcome so I undid it. I'm still looking for a way to get a better affect for this type of image.

Overall, I had a lot of fun with this project :)

I actually like the polygonal lasso tool a lot because it's a more simple way to make a selection when background colors are very close to the main object.

Project 4 Cameron Wold

So all I really did for these was a lot of cutting and extracting parts of images that I wanted and arranging them in the layout correctly. The one to the left is a picture I took of my Death band shirt and I put a picture of my face in front of the mans face. I used the poster edges filter on my face to make it look more drawn but it looked really off in comparison to the normal picture. So because of that I used that filter on the entire picture. Then I changed a bit of color and lighting of my face through blending options to try to match the setting and being under a hood through color overlay, gradient overlay, and a few more. After that I put my right eye on my left eye as well to give it an off kilter look that I am not all there. Finally I just cut and pasted a wart on to my face.

For the 2nd picture I just used a picture of my mom and nephew and cut and copied from those 3 band shirts placing them in the background by removing the sky in the normal pic. Same as with my face. I then created a box and added some blending options to give it an aesthetic look and just copied it, made the box a little bigger and changed the color so it looked like it was the brim of one box. Then I just made 2 different text layers and I was done.

Project 4

FILTERS:
In my project I used the sharpen tool on the polar bear as it was a little blurry. The sharpening on the polar bear allowed me to lower the opacity to blend with background. I used the Gaussian blur on the edges of the sun as it blended it better with the background.

I used clipping mask on the text and applied flames in the background. I was trying to keep the picture simple and didn't want to add to much to the background. I really didn't want to add text but it was a requirement. I tried using the warp tool on the sky and also trying to make the the smoke clouds bigger but didn't like the outcome, so I took it off. Overall I liked using the blending options like the Gaussian blur and also turning down the opacity. Found this project fun but also difficult on choosing a topic I wanted to stick with to create my picture around.

This is my "Fortress of Solitude"

I had to cut out the Planet of this image:

I used the Pen-Tool to extract the planet. I Pasted the image of the planet onto the image of the snowy mountain. To get the faded look I added a mask to the plant and used the gradient tool to achieve the fade look.

I also had to extract the city from this image using the pen tool.

I duplicated the background and place the cut out of the city under it. I used the brush eraser tool and erased the parts of the copy of the background so it looks like the city is a little behind the mountain.

As for the text, I used a font I had downloaded from http://dafont.com and applied some layer effects like drop shadow and stroke.

I also used the stroke option to get the black and white border around the image. They are 2 separate strokes.

Overall this was a fun project. I liked how it turned out. It makes me want to go snowboarding!

for this image i selected the flower using a mask, Then used a water color filter to make the water look like black ice and added another dust&scratches filter with a radius of 2 to blur the ice and highlight the flower very strongly.

i Used a total of 4 images 1 gradient 1 clipping mask and a clipped layer. The clipping mask is on the background that way the sky blends in smoothly. The next thing is the man jumping i used the transform scale tool to make him smaller and fit into the image and arrange him onto the pillar. The raptor i used the scale and warp tools to shift its head and legs to give him a sense of distress as he calls out to his friend. There is one layer that's for text.The gradient was used to change the color of the scene to more purple.
